"I don’t usually read military-type books, but something about this woman’s voice really resonated with me when I saw the video promo for Bronco Strong. So I put aside my reservations and read the book, and I am so glad that I did. The author brings a level of humanity, love and compassion to the story of her soldiers that you don’t normally expect to encounter when you think ‘military’… we tend to be glued to the stereotypes of ‘tough guys with guns’, who are trained to be unemotional… the author shows us that this is not the case, and though they are all indeed well trained, they are an emotional, compassionate troupe… I mean, who’s ever heard of soldiers hugging their commanding officer? Say what??? It is very clear from the writing and the ‘voice’ that Col. Angela M. Odom cares deeply about her fellow human beings, and loved, cherished and respected her soldiers. She never wants to hog the limelight for herself… her stories are all about her team. She even dedicates chunks of their personal stories and in their voices, towards the end of the book. "Just finished Bronco Strong. Great book and really gave me pause for thought about both a brother and a brother-law who served in Iraq and Afghanistan and opened my eyes to the scope of what it takes to support combat operations in a war zone., Although the book is heavy with acronyms and terminology (military buffs will love the accuracy) it also illuminated the human side and the huge responsibility of commanding troops in a war zone. We forget that the logistics of supporting troops in the field are quite complex and that support personnel also face the same dangers as any soldier in a hostile environment. One of the things I was struck by was (Retired) Colonel Odom's deification and respect for the men and women that served under her. And once I was engaged could almost feel the grief in her words when she describes losing SSG Clamens. You only have to connect to one story like this understand that every loss is heartbreaking. The book ends with several writings by the soldiers of Bronco Strong describing their duties and impressions which are both well-detailed and thoughtful. I was truly impressed with (Retired) Colonel Odom's professionalism and level of dedication, and especially this weekend when we honor our veteran's I'm honored to write this review."
