Ted Cruz Case Study: What Do You Expect of Your Leaders?

2021 case study podcast Feb 23, 2021

QUESTION: What do we expect of people who are in positions of power and authority?

During this unscientific case study, we'll take the facts surrounding a high profile elected officials’ decisions prior to, during and after he decided to fly to Cancun, Mexico.

Mr Cruz, a high-profile Republican who ran for the US presidency in 2016, has not only drawn criticism for taking the international trip, but also for reportedly leaving his dog, Snowflake, behind.

WHAT'S A CASE STUDY?

As stated by Wikipedia,  a case study involves an up-close, in-depth, and detailed examination of a particular case or cases, within a real-world context. For example, case studies in medicine may focus on an individual patient or ailment; case studies in business might cover a particular firm's strategy or a broader market; similarly, case studies in politics can range from a narrow happening over time (e.g., a specific political campaign) to an enormous undertaking (e.g.,...

A Communications Overview for Leaders

Communication is a core leadership function and is closely aligned with effective leadership. There is no escape from growing your communication skills. Every relationship requires skilled communicators, whether in casual groups, formal organizations or within communities.

Leaders are expected to express ideas and share information with various audiences; bosses, peers, employees, customers, partners, stakeholders and influencers.

Communication is giving, receiving or exchanging ideas, information, signals or messages through appropriate media, enabling individuals or groups to persuade, to seek information, to give information or to express emotions.

The Shannon and Weaver Model of Communication is a mathematical theory of communication that argues that human communication can be broken down into 6 key concepts: sender, encoder, channel, noise, decoder, and receiver. A later version of the theory by Norbert Weiner added a 7th concept (‘feedback’)...

The 6 things I learned from 6 people in 2020

Did you learn anything yet? I seek to learn something new each and everyday.

I don't mind failing or looking foolish or being rejected. I think falling down; not getting it right the first, second or 1,000th time is part of growth and development.

This is a new edition to an annual article I publish as a way of capturing the most significant lessons I've learned during the previous year. Review the articles of the six people I learned from in 20152016, 2017, 2018 and 2019

I remain unapologetic about my thoughts on learning and winning. I do not believe we lose, I believe we simply learn from our experiences.  In the year 2020, I learned a lot about myself and others.

I present the 6 people I learned 6 things from in 2020.

James Enos Clyburn is an American politician and a Democratic member of the U.S. House of Representatives from South Carolina. He has served as House Majority Whip since 2019.

I'm sure I don't stand alone...

10 Ways Poet Amanda Gorman Influenced Others

2021 leadership styles Feb 02, 2021

Amanda Gorman is an inspirational and charismatic leader.  At a five feet, three inches, she stood tall on a stage with luminaires during President Joe Biden's inauguration ceremony on January 20, 2021.

It was awe-inspiring watching his and Vice President Kamala Harris take their oath while being surrounded by their loving families, Former President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama arrive in their show stopping attire and dazzling performances from J.Lo, Lady Gaga, and Garth Brooks.

However, all eyes were on poet Amanda Gorman as she recited her poem ‘The Hill We Climb’.

Youth Poet Laureate Amanda Gorman spoke at the inauguration of U.S. President Joseph R. Biden on the West Front of the U.S. Capitol on January 20, 2021. The 22 year old Harvard alumna is now the youngest inaugural poet in U.S. history.

Five poets, Maya Angelou, Robert Frost, Miller Williams, Elizabeth Alexander, and Richard...

EP04: Lead By Example

2021 leadership Jan 26, 2021

Want more committed and invested team members? Walk it like you talk it or in other words, lead by example. The fact that you may have a well deserved and well earned title does not equate to effective results or an extraordinary level of commitment or investment from your team members.

“The three most important ways to lead people are:… by example… by example… by example.” Albert Schweitzer

Ideally you are self-aware and understand that its not your impressive title that earns you respect, its your behavior. Think about it. Your team members are working in their current compacity for a myriad of reasons. Their reasons may be as simple as putting food on the table for their family. Your fancy title, although impressive and important to you and your esteem, does not inspire some of your team members to produce quality work or to invest in your vision.

People who say one thing but do another eventually lose credibility.

2021 mindset network skillset Jan 19, 2021

I'm inspired and intrigued by the ease in which powerful women show up in their work spaces. If as they have the script that that most of us are struggling to read and follow.

In light of the historic Biden/Harris administration, let's' take deep dive into two of the most visible women on the world's stage in January 2021; Vice President Kamala Harris and Dr. Jill Biden, our First Lady of the United States.

Vice President Kamala Harris

Kamala Devi Harris is an American politician and attorney who is the vice president-elect of the United States.

She is the United States' first female vice president, the highest-ranking female elected official in U.S. history, and the first African American and first Asian American vice president.

Harris, 55, who is the daughter of immigrants — her father is Jamaican and her mother is Indian — has been leading as a public servant for decades: She was the district attorney of San Francisco and the attorney...

EP02: Check Your Circle

Leaders, check your circle.

Are you surrounded by people who affirm you and hold you accountable?

If not, widened your circle, search for a different community, and begin to reach your goals in peace.

Don't have a supportive, accountable community?

Build One.

Let's focus on becoming aware of the influence of the people you interact with the most.

My question to you is "Does your circle affirm you and hold you accountable?" My message is check your circle

Last week I attended a 3-Day virtual event titled, "Manifest Your Vision" hosted by Rosetta Thurman. Each day we focused on a different theme:
Day 1: Ignite your purpose and create your vision
Day 2: Breakthrough Your Barriers
Day 3: Take Aligned Actions

One of the things that came out of Day 1 was my Personal Mission Statement: Show Up for me First, Then Serve Others From the Overflow.

What's your personal mission statement?

EP01: Three Mindset Hacks for Women Leaders

2021 leadership Jan 09, 2021

mindset refers to whether you believe qualities such as intelligence and talent are fixed or changeable traits. ... People with a fixed mindset believe that these qualities are inborn, fixed, and unchangeable.

Mindset is defined as the established set of assumptions, methods, or notions held by someone.

What we believe impacts how we think about our abilities and potential, therefore fueling our behavior and predicting our success.

Fixed Mindset and Growth Mindset describes our relationship with failure. Whether we avoid it at all costs or we understand that we’re all capable of evolving and learning from situations and circumstances.

The “growth mindset” creates a passion for learning rather than a hunger for approval.

Three Mindset Hacks women leaders should consider as we move into 2021 are:

  1. Gratitude
  2. Determining what you’ll Stop, Start and Keep
  3. Identify your big audacious goal

Write or document six things for...

You are the CEO of Your Life

2020 better u tv Dec 29, 2020

Run your life similar to a successful Chief Executive Officer of a profitable corporation.

You are your very own Chief Executive Officer (CEO)!

How's it going?

You have survived 100% of the good, the bad and the ugly things that have occurred in your life. You are exactly where you are in life because of your conscious and unconscious habits, choices, and relationships.

I'm often encouraged by the concept of living for the DASH. When we go to a cemetery and notice the markings on various grave stones. It indicates the date the person was born. Then there is a straight line followed by the date they died. The straight line or the dash indicate the amount of time they lived.

Let's decide to live for the dash while being conscious of the end date without really dwelling on it.

Each of us are born with a set of circumstances that may serve as a weight holding us back from achieving our goals and dreams. Most of us are also born with with set of circumstances that...

Today is Veterans Day!

2020 holiday veterans day Nov 11, 2020

Gratitude is our watchword

Today is November 11, 2020 we celebrate Veterans Day!   I urge you to share some semblance of gratitude with the military veterans in your life

The best thing about serving in the greatest Army on the planet for 27 years, 11 months, and 11 days is the men and women I had the honor to meet.

I loved serving and I love them. The crazy thing I've noticed over the past few years is the distance that's seeped into the nooks and crannies of relationships because of so much foolishness associated with how we view the world.

REAL TALK
Whether you wear a mask or don't believe they are effective, I still value our time together. Whether you support Trump or Biden, I still value our time together. Whether we served together when I was a private or a cadet in ROTC at the University of Southern Mississippi or somewhere along my military timeline; I value our time together.

The point is I'm grateful to have served and I value each of you.

If...
